Guitar Amp Schematics

Marshall

Jim Marshall started building amps in 1962. He did this together with technical friend Ken Bran. Their first amps were very heavily "inspired" on the 1959 Fender Tweed 4x10" Bassman. Little did they know then that they were at the threshold of a rock 'n roll revolution...

1962 The very first Marshall amps that saw the light of day were called the JTM45 amps. These amps were more or less a copy of the Fender 1959 Tweed Bassman. These amps were built as heads (or tops) separated from the speaker cabinets. The speaker cabinets were closed 4x12" Celestion loaded cabinets.
1965 The first combo's (models 1961 & 1962) appeared halfway this year.
Desperate to build a factory large enough to meet demand, Jim Marshall made a deal with the Rose Morris company. In exchange for the necessary funding (to build this new factory) Rose Morris acquired the exclusive worldwide rights to distribute Marshall amps for the next 15 years. This caused the Marshall amps to be very expensive the follwoing 15 years.
In this year the Plexi face plates were introduced.
The first 100W models were introduced this year.
1966 The JTM45 panels were changed to the JTM50 panels with the switch to the EL34 output tubes. The GZ34 rectifiers were phased out to be replaced by solid state rectifiers.
1967 The hand bent aluminium chassis was replaced by the steel machined chassis, making the amps much more robust and road proof.
The Marshall 200's were introduced this year.
The JTM panels were replaced by the JMP panels.
1968 The Marshall 200 was redesigned and renamed to the Marshall Major.
1969 The Plexi panels were replaced by gold brushed aluminium panels.
1975 The introduction of the Master Volume amps (2203 & 2204).
1981 The introduction of the JCM800 amps.
1982 The 20th anniversary of Marshall.
The introduction of the JCM800 Split Channel amps (2205 & 2210).
1985 The introduction of the Integrated Bass System (IBS) amps.
1987 The Silver Jubilee 25th Anniversary amps.
1988 The first 1959 and 1987 reissue amps.
1989 The introduction of the Series 9000 19" rack system amps.
1990 The introduction of the JCM900 amps.
1991 The introduction of the first Valvestates.
1992 The 30th Anniversary amps.
1993 The introduction of the JCM900 SL-X amps.
1994 The introduction of the Dynamic Bass System (DBS) amps.
1995 The introduction of the JTM30 & JTM60 amps.
1996 The introduction of the second Valvestates.
1997 The 35th Anniversary amps.
The introduction of the DSL JCM2000 amps.
The introduction of the JCM600 amps.
2002 The 40th anniversary of Marshall Amps!

Viewing this brief history of the Marshall amps, several era's can be distinguished:

Although this division is not entirely accurate, it does give a good impression of the different era's. The first decade in the history of Marshall is regarded by some as the "Golden Years".

In the following overview, I try to place the amps in some kind of chronological ordering. Keep in mind that allthough I try to be complete, this is obviously not a complete list, though I hope it will be some day...

The JTM45's

The very first (prototype) Marshall amps were built in 1962 in Jim's kitchen. In these early years the amps, their features and especially the cosmetics varied a lot.

Early 1965 saw the introduction of models 1961 and 1962. These were the first Marshall combos.

JTM45, 45W head

This was the very first Marshall amp. It was built from 1962 up to 1966. It didn't actually have a model number at first, but later it was called a JTM45.

The circuit was a 1959 Fender Tweed Bassman (circuit 5F6-A) clone. It is said that the first prototype and early production amps were fitted with two 5881 beam power tetrodes, three ECC83's and a GZ34 rectifier tube, but soon KT66 tubes were used instead of the 5881's.

The Fender Bassman used a 12AY7 as the input tube but the JTM45 was fitted with a 12AX7/ECC83 which has a higher gain. The mix resistors (which mix together both channels after the first triode sections) were originally 270kΩ on the early models. Sometime (late) in 1966 these mix resistors were raised in value to 470kΩ.

These amps had 2 channels with each a volume control and two inputs (making a total of four inputs). Next came the low, mid, high & presence controls. There was also a power switch and a standby switch with a power indicator.

The first JTM45 amps had no model number printed on them. Later (probably in 1963) aluminium panels were used having JTM 45 and MK II printed on them (implying the first serie of amps were the MK I's).

GIF

1960 JTM45, 4x12" 60W cabinet

These first speaker cabinets didn't have a model number at first. In 1964 these cabinets were given the model number 1960. They were angled front cabinets and were fitted with four 12" Celestion G12-15 speakers, instead of the four 10" Jensen speakers in an open cabinet like Fender did. These 12" Alnico speakers were essentially the same speaker as the Celestion VOX Blue speakers. Late 1965 or early 1966 the ceramic speakers were replacing the alnico's.

1961 JTM45 Lead, 45W 4x10" combo

This amp used the 1987 tremolo chassis in a 4x10" combo cabinet.

1962 JTM45 Bass & Lead, 45W 2x12" combo (Blues Breaker)
1972, 2x12" 50W extension cabinet

This amp used the 1986 bass tremolo chassis in a 2x12" combo cabinet. This was the amp Eric Clapton used on the legendary John Mayall's Bluesbreakers "Beano" album early in 1966.

Very few of the 1972 2x12" (horizontal) extension cabinets were built and these cabinets are very rare. The speakers were two Celestion G12-20 speakers. These G12-20 speakers were 'M' magnet speakers with an H1777 cone. These are not the small magnet G12-20s, but are actually 25W Greenbacks with a different cone, sounding different than a typical 25W Greenback from a 1960's 4x12 cab.

Note that the typical 100pF bright cap wasn't fitted on the earliest models.

See the Plexi Palace JTM45 page for some great JTM45 pictures.

The JTM50's

In 1966 Marshall switched to EL34 tubes. To reflect this the JTM45 panels were changed to JTM50 panels. The GZ34 rectifiers were phased during this time, allthough there are even JMP 50 models with GZ34 rectifiers.

In the first half of 1967 the JTM panels were dropped all together and the JMP panels were introduced. So the JTM50 amps were in production for less than a year from 1966 to 1967.

1960, 4x12" 75W cabinet

By 1965 the 1960 cabinets were rated as having a maximum power handling of 75 watts, but if different speakers were actually used is unclear.

The JTM100's

In 1965 the first (prototype and production) 100W amps (model 1959) were constructed using two 50W output transformers. Shortly later 100W output transformers were used. The first 100W Lead and Bass models used left over JTM45 panels (until some time in 1966) but the 100W PA models did use JTM100 panels, as these amps sported 8 inputs instead of 4, requiring different panels anyway.

In the first half of 1967 the JTM panels were dropped all together and the JMP panels were introduced.

The early incarnations of the JTM100's varied in design. The JTM100's were the first amps to use solid state rectifiers. A tube rectifier was just too much hassle and too expensive. The first JTM100's used a 3" power transformer giving a B+ of around 560V. Due to a design mistake of Drake (the transformer supplier at that time) the US primary tap wasn't correct, giving a dangerous B+ of around 640V! Later (in 1967) a smaller 2,5" power transformer was used giving a B+ of around 460V.

Early JTM100's were fitted with KT66's. Later JTM100's were fitted with EL34's.

Schematically, all the JTM100's are all very similar. The PA version had 4 channels and 8 inputs instead of the usual 4 inputs and 2 channels.

1959 JTM100 Super Lead, 100W head

The Super Lead JTM100 was introduced in 1965.

1959T JTM100 Tremolo Super Lead, 100W head

The Tremolo version was an idea of Pete Townsend but it wasn't very popular and not many were produced.

The Majors

In 1967 Marshall introduced the Marshall 200 amps. These amps only had 3 knobs: Treble, Bass and Volume. This early Marshall 200 was also known as "the Pig". In the course of 1968 the Low-High tone control circuitry was changed to a Low-Mid-High tone control and these amps were now called the Marshall Majors.

Using four KT88 power tubes, these amps were very powerfull, very loud and very expensive. They were in production up to 1974. An ECC82 was used as the driver tube for the four KT88's.

The 18W Marshalls

In 1965 Marshall introduced the 18W "practice" combo amps. Although they were not very loud, they certainly could "rock". There were originally 3 combo models: 1958, 1973 and 1974. They had a tremolo and an optional reverb. These amps used 2 EL84 tubes in the power amp, 3 ECC83's in the pre amp and an EZ81 rectifier in the power supply. If the reverb was fitted, an ECL86 was used as the reverb drive/recovery tube. These 18W amps were discontinued in 1967, to be succeeded by the 20W Marshalls.

The 20W Marshalls

In 1967 Marshall introduced the 20W amps as the successors of the 18W amps. They didn't sound as good as the original 18W amps though. These amps used 2 EL84 tubes in the power amp, 2 ECC83's in the pre amp and a solid state rectifier in the power supply. They were discontinued around 1974.

The JMP's

In 1967 the JMP (Jim Marshall Products) panels were introduced. In July 1969 Marshall dropped the Plexi face plates and switched to the gold colored brushed aluminium metal face plates as we know them still today.

In 1975 the Master Volumes, 2203 & 2204, were introduced.

The US distributor at that time (Unicord Inc.) decided to switch to 6550 output tubes in favor of the EL34's. Too many Marshalls were coming back under warranty with defective output tubes. Apparently the EL34's didn't like to be knocked about while being shipped from Europe to the US of A. Instead of fitting new EL34's, Unicord decided to fit 6550's, thinking that these "heavier" tubes would last beyond the warranty period. This in itself was true, but many American guitar players were wandering why their Marshall amps sounded so different from their European brothers. Some people actually like the bright sound of the 6550's in their Marshall amps but most guitar players prefer the original sound of the EL34's.

1930 JMP Popular, 10W 1x12" combo

This amp was in production only shortly from 1972 up to 1973. It looks just like a 20W Marshall amp. It's a 4 input, 2 channel amp featuring a tremolo.

This amp had 2 channels and 4 inputs and a reverb. The 2069 cabinet was a very tall straight front 4x12" cabinet.

The 2000 Series

The 2000 Lead and 2001 Bass heads are probably the loudest and most powerfull Marshall tube amps ever built. These amps were introduced in april 1981, around the same time as the JCM800 series. It isn't clear if these amps were actually part of the JCM800 series. The schematics suggest they are, but you won't find JCM800 printed on the amps.

Special high power version of the speaker cabinets were made for these beasts.

The JCM800's

Having been finally freed from the 15 year exclusive Rose Morris distribution contract, Marshall launched the new JCM800 serie early in 1981. The JCM800 Split Channel amps were introduced a year later in 1982. The whole JCM800 serie was discontinued in 1989 just prior to the introduction of the JCM900 serie amps.

The JCM800 range is split into the Lead amps (this section) the Bass amps and the solid state amps. The PA and Organ amps and cabinets were dropped.

The Super Leads (1959 & 1987) were issued as heads only, while the Master Volumes (2203 & 2204) and the new Split Channels (2205 & 2210) were also issued as combo's (4103, 4104, 4210, 4211 & 4212).

The JCM800 amps had a larger logo than before, and the heads also featured grille cloth on the upper two thirds of the front instead of being completely covered with the usual black vinyl.

In 1982, the 20th anniversary of Marshall Amps, some of the JCM800 amps were issued in neat white vinyl.

Under the JCM800 "regime", the model numbering was changed. The heads retained their original model numbers, but the combo's were given model numbers in the 4000 range. The solid state and hybrid heads were given model numbers in the 3000 range and the solid state combo's were given model numbers in the 5000 range. In some older schematics the 4103 & 4104 combo's are still referenced to as models 2103 & 2104. The solid state amps didn't have JCM800 printed on their panels.

The JCM800 Bass amps

With the JCM800 Bass range of amps Marshall specifically wanted to get a foot into the Bass amp market. This line of amps and cabinets was soon to be revamped into the IBS range.

1986 JCM800 Bass, 50W head

The design of the JCM800 1986 and JCM800 1992 amps departed from the "classic" Marshall Bass amp design and incorporated a better tone stack with a mid sweep and a slope control not found on the older JMP 1986 and JMP 1992 amps.

The (JCM800) Solid State amps

Allthough these amps do not contain any tubes, I feel that the Marshall amps story is incomplete without mentioning these amps. It isn't quite clear to me whether or not hese amps were actually part of the JCM800 range, as these amps didn't have the JCM800 logo's, but they were included in the JCM800 catalog and they were manufactured in the same period and had the same looks and style.

The 25th Anniversaries

To celebrate 25 years of Marshall amps and for Jim Marshall being in rock 'n roll for 50 years, the Silver Jubilee amps were introduced in 1987. This explains the model number 2550 (25/50) and name Silver Jubilee (25th Anniversary). The 1987 amps and cabinets were covered with silver vinyl and had chrome silver panels instead of the usual gold brushed aluminium panels. In the following years these amps were manufactured in the normal black vinyl, but the chrome panels stayed.

These amps could be switched to "half" power by switching the output pentodes to triode mode. The type 25/50 is also a reference to this feature. Not many people actually use this "feature" as the sound in triode half power mode isn't as desirable as it is in pentode full power mode.

In 1996 a limited edition (of 3000 amps) Slash Signature of the 2555 amp (and cabinet) was reissued.

The 9100 and the 9200 are the successors of the original 9005 amp. They were introduced in 1993.

Beware when replacing the original Sovtek 5881 tubes with EL34 tubes as these amps are only 3 rack units high. The Svetlana EL34's and JJ EL34's don't fit, as they are too high! The Svetlana 6L6GC's do fit, but the JJ 6L6GC's don't.

JCM900's

The JCM900 serie amps were first introduced in 1990. They came in two flavors: High Gain Master Volume and High Gain Dual Reverb. The Master Volume amps were a further development of the original 2203/2204 Master Volume amps and they were called the (Hi Gain) Master Volume MkIII amps. The Dual Reverb amps were based on the JCM800 2205/2210 amps.

The 2100's & 2500's were superceded by the SL-X's in 1993.
